The Free edition of RSLogix 500 only supports the MicroLogix 1000 and MicroLogix 1100 models.
The MicroLogix 1200, 1400, and 1500 models all require RSLogix 500 Starter or Standard.
RSLogix 500 Starter is less expensive but does not support online editing at runtime. That's OK in your case because the MicroLogix 1200 doesn't support that functionality either.
Ken,
The highlighted Editions, RSLogix 500 Starter or Standard, would suggest they are the minimum Editions required for those MicroLogix controllers. Not quite. You're forgetting one other Edition in the middle...
The free Edition is called RSLogix Micro Starter
Lite Edition and as you correctly say only supports the MicroLogix 1000 and 1100.
However, the next available product for the MicroLogix family is RSLogix Micro Starter Edition, and is not free. This will support all of the MicroLogix controllers only. This is the minimum Edition the OP would require to program their MicroLogix 1200.
Next you can go to RSLogix Micro Developer Edition which will still support all the MicroLogix controllers only, but with some additional features.
After that you can move up to RSLogix 500 Starter or Standard Edition which will support all of the MicroLogix controllers and the SLC controllers.
If a user just wants to be able to program all of the MicroLogix controllers then RSLogix Micro Starter Edition would suffice and is much less expensive than RSLogix 500 Starter Edition or indeed Standard Edition.
One supplier's website I've just looked up lists these current prices...
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION 9324-RLM0100ENE RSLOGIX MICRO STARTER EDITION -
$141.00
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION 9324-RLM0800ENE RSLOGIX MICRO DEVELOPER EDITION -
$509.00
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION 9324-RL0100ENE RSLOGIX 500 STARTER EDITION -
$1220.00
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION 9324-RL0300ENE RSLOGIX 500 STANDARD EDITION -
$2480.00
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION 9324-RL0700ENE RSLOGIX 500 PROFESSIONAL EDITION -
$4290.00
As you can see, the RSLogix Micro Starter Edition is considerably less expensive than RSLogix 500 Starter Edition. Enough so to sway a beginner toward considering purchasing it.
RSLogix Micro Starter Edition also supports Online Editing, but only for the MicroLogix controllers which support this feature. Namely the MicroLogix 1100 and 1400.
So RSLogix Micro Starter Edition (Catalog Number: 9324-RLM0100ENE) would be the minimum Edition required to program a MicroLogix 1200 controller.

George
