Virtual box and VMware Workstation 12 Player.

Hi.

Currently I am at work using VMware Workstation 10, with great success.

Now, for my private use, I am thinking about using Virtual Box or VMware Workstation 12 Player (because of cost, obviously).
One thing that I worry about, is if both of these have the possibility to assign the MAC address of the real physical ethernet port to the virtual ethernet port in the VM.
I have found that when using VMware Workstation that this is critical for the success of connecting to various devices from the VM.

Anybode know ?

Hi Jesper,

From my virtualbox settings, you can type in any MAC address you want. It's just a question of whether your specific devices (routers/hubs etc.) will permit 2 computers with the same MAC address (one being your host and the other your guest in virtualbox).

Thanks for the reply.
So far I have not have had any problems with the same MAC address in both physical and virtual PCs (maybe the outside world sees them as one ?).
Now I will definitely give virtualbox a go.
Will report my findings.

So far I've never had to touch the MAC address in Virtualbox. Maybe try that first. I've gone online with S7 PLCs over Ethernet without issues.

Also assigning IP addresses and Device Names for devices that dont have an IP or Device Name yet ?
STEP7 uses ISO protocol for this, not TCP/IP, and I have found that for this to work, the virtual network adapter must have the physical adapters MAC address.

Ah ha! I didn't do that yet... but all the same, it's free to try it without touching the MAC first, and if that doesn't work, try to match the MAC in the Virtualbox network settings.

VM Player : no snapshots
VirtualBox: yes, snapshots

That alone makes VirtualBox a more useful choice.
Once you get it working I'm sure you'll be happier with VirtualBox.

How about bridged networking?

network cards and exchanges network packets directly, circumventing your host operating
system’s network stack.
