multiplex thermocouples

In order to feed dozens of thermocouples to a PLC my default plan is to buy enough modules to individually wire each one.

Is there a reliable and *accurate* way to multiplex the thermocouples? It would save me some bucks.

It looks at here. Manufacturer of Spain.

It would like to find others. Find here http://www.directindustry.com/

I had one customer insist that you could average a number of thermocouples by wiring them in parallel.

I believe that it would work, but I havn't seen it myself.

You could try some sort of field bus.
Profibus and ASi have input modules for temperature sensors, although I don't know if the ASi ones will take thermocouples.

Perhapse Device Net or other bus system also have these types of input?

Other than that, on site here we have a lot of applications with dozens of thermocouple inputs. We wire each one back individually to its own input. The Bus systems look appealing to us for our next round of upgrades.

Hope this helps,

Doug

I would definitely go with Profibus. The thermocouple heads are a bit expensive (at least in the UK - £200 per head vs £460 per 8xAI(S7))and depending on your PLC type might not save too much, but think of the wiring!!Glorious.
