Hi there guys,

At work we have some Siemens S7-1200 PLCs and have just got the Step 7 Basic software. Typically it has got to this point where we have the PLC and the software but no cable

Looking it up I need am IE TP cable. Is this the same as a standard ethernet just a bit more rugged?

Thanks for your help guys,

Dan

That is just a standard ethernet cable. But with a siemens pricetag on it i assume ;)

Any TP cable that you can get your hands on is fine and will do the job.

Can you use step 7 basic software with S7-1200 series CPU's? I thought TIA portal was needed for the newer generation s7-1200 and s7-1500 CPUs? We are currently using TIA portal v13 for our (limited) S7-1200 series CPU controlled machines.

I am currently playing about on a test rig with a S7-315 and a S7-1212C CPU. I'm using a spare S7-1212C CPU purely as an interface as it has Modbus communications capability built in. To program the 1212C CPU I'm using TIA portal v13, but for the 315 CPU I'm using Step 7 Simatic Manager v5.5 (I Think!)

But as JeckeData says, any ethernet cable will do! I'm using a random selection of ethernet cables.

There are two versions of Step 7 TIA Portal - Basic for the S7-1200 family and Professional for the S7-300/400 (newer versions), 1200 and 1500.
