I am sure this a very basic question for all you AB guys but do you have to have RSLINX in order for RSLOGIX500 to communicate with the PLC?

If you buy the RSLOGIX500 Starter Kit do you also need to get RSLINX?

Yes, you do need RSLinx. However, I believe that you get a lite version free with the RSLogix. I know for sure that you get it with Standard.

RSLinx Lite you can download from the AB site but you have to register as a Member. The login stuff (for me) is being a little strange now that they are changing the site for one name/password access but once you get registered there are/is alot of info and downloads available.

Well you can download the Lite version from the website so either way it should be ok.

It's been strange for me too. You login and it takes you right back to the login screen. I reloaded the webpage and did it again and then it let me through so who knows.

RS Linx does come with RS Logix

A coppy of RS Linx comes with RS Logix. It is on the same CD. I downloaded v 2.31.00 a few months ago http://support.rockwellautomation.com/WebUpdates/product_list.asp and had to enter the registration code for RS Lgix to get it. That is the lowest version that will support th 1747 PIC/AIC driver.
