types of plc

You may want to clarify your question. Are you asking how many name brands or how many different styles of PLC's??????

I am fairly certain this was a poorly phrased question on "styles" of plc...ie the old brick, modular, rack question. I was being a smart A with my original answer but since English isnt the posters original language there may be some translation issues.

There are 3 "styles" of plc as I mentioned above. The brick, now commonly called "micro", modular and rack. The "modular" style is becoming defacto for high end applications. The micro is becoming more expandable making it more "modular". This link will offer more info on "styles" etc but is becoming outdated.

To clarify more a plc is what the name implies...a controller. It can use different types of inputs and outputs...discrete(digital), analog, high speed etc. It can use many different communication standards and protocols.

Please use more detail when asking a question, if you have a problem with English there are many here that may translate or assist in your native language.

Rack: http://www.ab.com/plclogic/plc5/

square d modicon,ge fanuc,klockner moller,omron,allen bradly very

There are actually three styles, but because we don't look like everyone else, we are often forgotten.

1. Brick
2. Modular / Rack Mount
3. Embedded / Board Level

A question to those of you who separate Rack Mount and Modular...how is one different from the other.

As Ron had mentioned, there are now some brick that have slots for additional expansion, but they are still bricks, only with expansion slots.

Beats the heck out of me, but those three seem to be the answer to question 1 on the archaic industrial control class homework :)

The SLC 500 family is a growing family of small programmable controllers built around two hardware options: a fixed controller or a modular controller.

Thats ABs own words from the first link.

Modular the PS and/or CPU may be part of the mounting system.

Using the PLC5 as an example of rack mount PS, CPU etc etc are separate items.

These days there is a fine line on the fifferential

I agree, that there are three kinds.

But what are the three???

Big, little, and in between, or

Pretty, ugly, and pretty ugly.

Just my perception, with no real formal training.
