Hey all.. I am going to start training a rookie tomorow and want to start at the basics...I know i have seen a link here to symobls..(Not cad) such as stop, e stop, thermometer, float..etc....but for the life of me i cant find it..any one help out?

Thanks

Darren

Nope but along the lines...Thanks for the link... Just trying to show him what all the symbols are..figure start with circuit diagrams and move from there..

LOL i get the hint...but no...:) There was good one prob from ron and it had every sybol they ever had! I did search (Realy i did!!)and i turned up a whack load of CAD threads but no real good symbol stuff..

Anywho..thanks...i will keep searching!

I actually have several pages with different electrical symbols. Those can be found at: http://www.patchn.com/electrical.htm The 2 & 3 wire control pages may help http://www.patchn.com/twowire.htm, that page has a very basic start stop animated gif. I do need to extend the symbols to show the mushroom head etc style ESTOPS etc. There are also pages on WYE and DELTA systems.

The motor section offers wiring connections, formulas etc: http://www.patchn.com/motors.htm

I also have some hydraulic symbols: http://www.patchn.com/fluidsymbols.htm

This page (which Eric posted above) does show more symbols for estops etc. They are under Useful Information:
http://www.searcheng.co.uk/toc.shtml

The pushbuttons are shown here: http://www.searcheng.co.uk/selection/control/Articles/useful/drawing/pushbutton.htm

Thanks for the links ron...

Well its official..i suck at teaching..:)
I guess i just assume people to know things...
any one have an idea of where to start...from the very beginig?..This guy is an apprentice and has never seen a schematic..However he far from dumb..i know if i could show him in a way he would understand he would be off and running in no time..I however do not posess the skill to find that way he would understand..

His access to the net is limited..(He lives in the boonies and on a good day he 28.8 out of his modem..)

Darren I dont know what you may have in the way of spare parts but maybe you could (or basically work with him) to setup a small training lab. If 3 phase is accessible then wire a disconnect, setup contactors for motors, wire a few motors, wire a 3 phase to single phase xfmr, make a regular start stop ckt using 2 & 3 wire method. Once you get started you will see how far you will need to go. Maybe setup a small plc with different inputs, (prox, limit switches, etc) and control motors, relays etc etc.

Once your done then you can leave it in place for the next rookie.

good suggestion ron..However in my mind you need to be able to read a schematic to wire something..alas..he cant...its not his fault he just hasn't been shown..

I just typed up some stuff for him for tomorow..stating at the basics..I have given him a print out of some symbols..(Thanks Ron! i dint know how many people thank you but i do..as well as Phil!) and a sequence..such as switch a is tuned on motor M starts...It sounds simple but if you dont know then you dont know.. The sequences get progressively harder..(There is only 5 at the moment)until we end up with if,and,or,then, else statments...If all goes well then we can start timers and math..

I do have a ABmicro 1200 sitting on the desk and was thinking of making a trainer with it..however i think people need a good understanding of Motor control before they can even think about moving to ladder..

This guy has wired the last 4 panels we installed without a hiccup..(He also did that with no drawings..just verbal instructions from me..so i know the talent is there..BTW these "panels" are large 16 slot modican backplanes with all sorts of modules..

Ron once again you are right..he dosnt have to know how to read it before he wires it!! I already got him to do it..i just prefer he knows!!

Again..Thatks for the link however the link to your site is more detailed and, lets face it better,.

As i said he wired a buch of panel for me with no drawing..he folowed instructions from me..what i want is for him to folow his own instincts..

Brings back memories of my controls teacher..he had two gardes..0 and 100% there was nothing in the middle..as he said " it works or it dosnt.."If it worked you got 100% in the test...if it didnt you got 0..there was no part marks becouse as he said half working in the field isnt good enough...

My thoughts exactly!!
