Need help with electromagnetics and son's school project.

Hint: whatever else - keep YOUR hands in your pockets while HE builds the project -
Quick tip: For very basic starter set, get 50' of doorbell wire from Lowes, or Home Depot, or Radio Shack - also a 6 volt lantern battery - wrap a LOT of the wire around a 16 penny nail - hook the ends of the wire to the battery and and pick up small nails, BB's, etc.
If your budget will stand a few more bucks, he can build a telegraph with a couple of day's work.

An electromagnet is a magnet made by wrapping a coil of wire around an iron or steel bar. When current is flowing through the coil, the bar becomes magnetized. It remains magnetized as long as the current continues to flow.
