for a science project, anybody know where to get some? besides the galvanized nail. thanks

Galvanized nails are only zinc coated steel, where the outside is pure zinc but then it progresses through a mixture of zinc/steel to pure steel.
If you are after wire I am not sure where to get it but for a chunk of zinc go and see a hot dip galvanising factory and ask for a chunk of their drippings. ie the bits that have to be cut off after the process is complete. I am sure if you asked nicely they will be forthcoming. Regards Alan Case

Have you checked out soldering wire, some of that is 99% zinc. In most cases zinc is used for coating and zinc wire will be on very large spools.

Heading towards OT......

some of that is 99% zinc

Just out of interest, which ones? I know that some brazing solders have quite a high Zn content but not 99%

As Europe is going to go "lead free soldering" next year I guess we'll have to get used to some new alloys and new soldering irons to handle the (probably) higher eutectic points.

I love the smell of lead/tin/rosin in the morning.......

awright fellas, thanks for all the replys. think i will try the nail down at the local home depot!
