We recently completed a project that was a "virtual" hi-rise condo complete with a virtual elevator ride. By far this was not the most complex project we've done but one of the most interesting and fun ones for sure.

The idea was to sell condo's for a large development. So the developer built a showroom, sales office and complete model of one unit in a single level, maybe 15,000 sq. ft building. Prospective buyers get on an elevator (which actually goes nowhere), and takes a ride to the 7th floor. When the elevator doors open, they step out into the 7th floor lobby and are greeted by a host on a plasma screen. There are a bunch of large plasma displays hidden behind mirrors, paintings etc.. in every room, (including the bath room), and the same guy escorts you around the model touting all the luxury amenities. The lights also change intensity to help push you in the right direction. What's really neat is the outside view. They have a huge mural depicting the local skyline as it would be viewed from the 7th floor balcony. The mural changes from day to night. Stars & moon come out, lights go on in other buildings etc...

You don’t have to imagine much to get a good feel for what it would be like to live there.

We only supplied the elevator (complete with working doors, scrolling PI, working car & hall buttons, and access control via RFID tags & reader). The elevator starts the "ride" by presenting an RFID tag to the reader, and pressing the 7th floor button. There's an audio intrduction while the elevator takes you to the 7th floor. Once on 7, a "ride crontroller" runs the rest of the show.

I cant find a website for the technical guy, but he was fun to work with and really knew his stuff.

If your in the area, go and take a "ride".

I can't see the link. Seems to be a 'pay-for-view'.
Mik's link should work, but doesn't. Might be a redirect issue?...

In any case, if you click on 'new search' (and w-a-i-t), then search for 'virtual' (and w-a-i-t again), Mike's article is the second hit.

It says one story building. Does ther elevator move at all, Mike?...

Is this the unit you were trying to sqeeeze the opening mechanism to fit limited overhead?

Was Aaron the 'virtual host?... :ROFLMAO:

Not one iodia... Actually due to space limitations, (I had to give up space for the hot tub on the other side of the wall), the elevator cab is a little on the small side. So to compensate the rear door is always open so as not to force crowding. As you enter the rear, your facing the working (front) door, car buttons, and position indicator, all wich draws your attention. So you really dont notice that the rear door dosnt close.

Hey, that's right! (I dont remember posting anything on that..). Usually you adjust the door operator from the car top. but here the car top was aganst the roof joists, and you couldnt get at it to repair or adjust it. We ended up using a vertical mount gear motor with a timing pully setup to drive the doors. We had to comply with the automatic door code so force & kenetic engergy are within the acceptable ranges. A DL06, & PWM motor control were tucked in behind the removable car button panel in a 3-1/2" deep box. The real challange was configuring everthing so there would be access for future service. (lots of cad work on this one). Everything was custom designed for this project. They gave us a small footprint, low overhead, and limited access.

Aaron, might have made a good virtual host. Personally I wasnt too impressed by the actor they used. He just seemed a little hokey to me, (I would have picked a girl), but that was pertty much overshadowed by the rest of the content and automation expierance. Who am I though...their selling like hotcakes, in large part due to this demonstration..

Mike,
You did get a BIG discount on your condo, right!

I think there was a virtual mine shaft elevator in a museum exhibit in Houston??

The front of the cage (wire screen) had a video screen to show the 'drop' and they pumped in some hot air and sound for ambience. I think there were some eccentrics on motors to slighty shake the cage during the 'descent'.

Museum exhibits, and other like things are PERFECT for PLCs.
Give me a yell on entertainment lasers, I can help.

I've done a BUNCH of static and traveling exhibits but never new about PLCs ('70s). Had to build my own black boxes.

Hmmm, I smell a little money here
