Hi, Wondering if anyone knows how to test a magflow unit.
The flowmeter is the 2 part unit. Not sure if it is the pipe section or the display section that is faulty.
I am not worried about calibration, just want to determine which piece needs replacing.

Alan,

Normaly ABB instruments support the Hart protocol. If you have a handheld hartcommunicator your problrm is solved in a minut?
If your not sure which one to replace, replace the elektronic part. You can't anything wrong be dooing this.

I have to agree with Fritz, in most cases it's the transmitter that goes bad and not the flow tube. However, if you are measuring a fluid that can coat the electrodes in the flow tube, such as glue or paint, then sometimes the electrodes will become coated with material and require cleaning. Most devices that support the HART protocol have built in diagnostics and can tell you what's wrong with themselves.

If it's a MagMaster, you can talk to it with a serial link using hyperterminal or similar. I think the default setting is 2400-8-N-1. Default passwords are 'user' for level 1 and 'engineer' for level 2.

ABB Magmaster series magnetic flow meters can be checked with the help of CALMASTER simulation tools. If you do not have the CALMASTER, call the ABB's Service Team. By calling 1-800-HELP﷓365, the customer can have an ABB certified CalMaster technician scheduled to perform a validation on site.

Most of the problems with these types of unit are the cables, check the cables and screening are OK and as per the installation instructions. You will get a fault if the 3-core signal cable does not have a balanced impedance i.e. if one wire is high resistance.
