I want to connect to RSLinx Gateway running in a remote location from my laptop using Modem and telephone lines ( via Ethernet is not accepted by the customer ) and then browse the RSLinx Gateway and drivers under that to go online to SLC connected on a DH+ network through the KT card. Is this feasible ? Anybody tried this before? What are the minimum configurations required?

Thanks..

The software specialists just wave their hands to explain this: "you just RAS in and away you go".

RSLinx Gateway is meant to allow remote RSLinx stations on a TCP/IP LAN to access a DH+ or ControlNet or DF1 link that is physically connected to the computer that is running RSLinx Gateway.

When you use a modem to dial into a Windows NT or 2000 workstation with the "Remote Access Services (RAS)" feature of Windows NT, RSLinx works just like you were on a TCP/IP network. You're actually using a modem-based protocol (like Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)), but that's just as good as far as RSLinx is concerned.

There is a good explanation of this technique in the RSLinx online documentation; go to the Index and type in the keyword "RAS".

Thanks Ken. Great Help.

I tried the set-up and found working. One more clarification . If more RAS clients want to connect to the RAS server , what kind of Modem should be there at there at the RAS Server end, I gues a dial-up modem will not work.

I am going to share one of my secrets...

This product kicks butt! (my opinion only)

3COM Office Connect 56K Lan Modem Hub

I can plug my SLC 5/05 (ethernet), my Adept Robot (ethernet), my Total Control panel (ethernet)...

...into this hub, then have my customers give me a dedicated phone line to the modem installed in the hub.

Then guess what? It's like my own VPN( virutal private network)! I can, as Ken just said, "RAS into my own machine(s) remotely", and program anything I want through ethernet.

However, under the watchful eyes of a guy at the machine while I help him troubleshoot from my laptop half way across the USA.

In this case, you don't need RS Gateway, you can just connect direct from your laptop's copy of RS Linx Lite, and program your SLC. Or fire up your yucky Adept AIM software, and go to town.
