I can tell that you have not programmed AB before, because if you had you would know that they do not give anything away for free. I don't believe you will find any free software that AB gives away, unless you find a someone you know who will provide you with a copy.

The only software that's free from a-b is for the pico relays (smart relay). It won't help with what you want to learn about the only thing you could do is start downloading their manuals.
If you know what family of plc's then look for the instruction set reference manual.

The instruction are pretty common across all family's except the control logix .

Thier part number for an item search should be 1747-rm-001c-en-p

Jon,

You can download an evaluation of LogixPro PLC Simulator from http://www.thelearningpit.com/lp/logixpro.html It emulates RS-Logix programming software but you can't actually program a PLC with it. The download is a free evaluation for 30 days.

Definately get the logixpro simulator as suggested by Steve. Here is a link to an AB interactive demo also.

93lt,
AB gives the linx lite free for download. However, its useless without the other software which AB charges big bucks for unless there something I'm missing. In my opinion, Rslinx is poorly design communication software package. It works great when it is working fine. At other times, it can really **** you off. I use AB products a lot. I also use GE,Modicon,Koyo,Mit.,Omron, and Siemens. All that I have listed as far as communication directly or networked blow AB's Rslinx out of the water as far as being reliable and ease of use.
I guess some would love it, but that is just my opinion.

You can get 10 Point RSLogix 500 Starter for free.

Starter Kit (http://www.ab.com/plclogic/micrologix/1000/RS500starter.html)

You will also need Linx Lite and the right processor if you want to do anything but play around with the software.

Good luck,

Marc
