Can anyone recommend a notebook pc that still comes with
9 pin serial and parallel ports? Someone I know
bought a Fujitsu 2340C (really nice) but I don't think its
available any more. Iwas hoping to avoid using the USB
converters.

Dell Latitude D810, D610, or D510. You can also get part very cheap off eBay for any of these very popular corporate laptops.

Hewlett Packard/Compaq have quite a few models with real serial ports.

yes our company has baught new HP PC which have this 9 pin port and i am also using that but i think u have to specify that when ordering

Serial is dead... Use Keyspan USB to serial adapter... works with everything I've tested it with.
Well good luck to you. I have tried 7 or 8 types now and some work most of the time. The best one I have had is an Omron one and is very expensive. I still had trouble with that from time to time with some devices. I believe the laptop also has quite a bit to say about whether the damned things work or not. Spent another $2500 AU and bought a laptop with a real serial port. Have not had a problem since.

Be carefull with blanket statements like serial is dead because there a quite a few of us that had still had problems with USB/serial converters.

For example, a friend of mine had a Wiretek one. He never had a problem with it. Tried it on my laptop and I did have problems.

The other solution that works very well if you do not want to use the USB convertor, is that there are a number of PCMCIA Serial Port Cards that work very reliably. These cards are a true and complete RS232 serial port and the one I use has never let me down.

A little dearer than the USB solution, but rock solid.

So I have heard but I found them pretty well impossible to buy in Ozz. Nearly ordered one from BB Electronics but would take too long and had a critical job on. Bought the laptop instead.

Also, from time to time, I use a specialised PCMCIA card in conjunction with the serial port. The serial port to the PLC and the PCMCIA card to another device. Monitoring both together.

I have same problem.Test everything from USb/RS232 to PCMCIA/RS232 and nothing
work 100%.This products work on most laptop if you conect directli too PLC.But if ,like I do, need too conect too remote PLC over RS232/RS485 nothing work.We test 22 diferent model of laptop from diferent manufecturers, and result is that onli old model 3-4 year old have and work with real thrue RS232 port.

If serial is dead then why do you need an adapter???

Actually some of the laptop manufactures thought the same way a few years ago, but now are installing real serial ports on more models.
