Siemens S5-100U question

I looked at Siemens site, but could not find S5 manuals to answer my question. I recently picked up an S5-100U PLC with rack and cards for spare parts for an induction welder in house. (I had one input module that may have had issues.)

Anyway, all components in this spare unit are identical to those in the machine, except for the CPU. In the machine is a 6ES5 102-8MA02. In this spare is a 6ES5 100-8MA02. After that part number, there's the 6 boxes with some of them XX out. The 100 unit has 1,2&3 XXX out. On the 102 unit in the machine, only 1&2 are XX out.

Questions:
What's the difference between the 100&102unit?

What's with the XX out boxes?

From the 1998 ST50 catalog, the 102 is a lot more capable.

IO and communications is limited on the 100 as well.

The X'd boxes indicate the version of that particular module. Typically, once the X'd number reaches 9 the last digit of the part number will be incremented and the X goes back into a box "1".

As I see it, there's a chance the 100 would work in place of the 102, but far greater chance it will not. I have no way to check the programming on the Eprom, so I'll just hang on to the 100 thinking posiibly work if needed, but most likely not.
