I have an existing application using SLC5/02 and an older operator panel using DH485 communication through 1747-AIC. The operator panel is remotely mounted and is using only three wires on its RS232 port. These wire on 1747-AIC RJ connector are labeled A, B, and Common. The AIC is an older one not the newer1747-AIC plus.
I like to replace that panel with an Allen-Bradley 550 or 600 panel-view using DH485 communication i.e. 2711-B5A2 or 2711-B6C2. But these panel-view come with RJ45 connector like a phone jack.
Does anyone know how to hook up this RJ45 using three existing wires A,B and Com on 1747-AIC. I am trying to avoid pulling a new conduit and new wire for RJ45. Is there any AB panel-view available with DH485 communication but with a three-wire (remote I/O type)connector.

Try a Pig Tail

When we first started running remote station at my old plant we had the same problem. We took apart the connectors and wired in the RJ45 connectors with it. I will have to make a few calls to find out the wire configuration. One real smart cookie wired it all up, I just work on PLC's and robots he did all the IT and communications.

A note; your existing operator interface probably uses a 9-pin D-SUB connector, but if it's connected to a 1747-AIC it is RS-485, not RS-232 electrical signaling.

Look at technote G16104 on the support.rockwellautomation.com knowledgebase. It gives the pinout for the "1761-CBL-AS09" cable that can be run from the 1747-AIC 6-pin Phoenix-style connector to an RJ-45 style DH-485 connector like that on a PanelView.

That technote tells us:

RJ-45 Pin
1 Signal B
2 Signal A
4 Common
7 Common

The way I understand them, if you're looking at the pins of an RS45 jack, cable down, locking tab away, then Pin 1 is on the left. I'll see if I can verify this at work on Monday.

Thanks Ken, Let me look at G16104. I believe, that's what I need. This app is using DH-485 through D-9 connector but only three wires A,B and Comm on RJ45 and D-9 are being used.
Thanks again.
