I have an Allen-Bradley Compact Logix system that I have been requested to integrate a barcode scanner for the direct reading of part numbers. Upon scanning the machine will setup to run a different part number.

Are there any direct I/O modules in this line for that purpose? What are my best options?

Thanks

Kent

You can use an ethernet scanner or a devicenet scanner or a RS232 scanner or just about any other communication protocol out there. The AB family can pretty much read any of these with all the different modules available. Usually you pick the scanner that you want and then integrate it into the system (within some reason).

We have many BCR's connected to Control Logix PLC's and my preferred method is to use RS232 modules mounted next to the scanners and connected to the PLC on DeviceNet. I use Escort Memory Systems CM11 units which are very robust and do not need an enclosure but there are quite a few suppliers who can offer similar devices.

DeviceMaster UP

The DeviceMaster UP comes in a 1-port or 4-port option, and will allow for connecting barcode scanners, RFID readers, or any other serial device, and allow that data to be communicated to the PLC via Ethernet/IP. No logic is needed for these "read-only" devices. We support write-to-tag and write-to-file, but can also accommodate polling as well (sample logic included).

If you're interested in evaluating one of our units free of charge for 60 days, please contact me directly, and I can coordinate this for you.
