upgrade S5 to S7

Hey guys,

I need to upgrade a siemens S5 plc to a S7 plc and since i am new to al this my question is wich S7 should i use and also wich hardware?
The first S5 PLC : S5 100U
PS930
CPU100
I/O:
4 x 8 bits IN
(8x 24V) ( 6ES5421-8MA12)


6 x 8 bits OUT
(8x 24V, 0.5A) (6ES5 441-8MA11)

and the second is the same but the power supply is a SITOP power 2.5
( 6EP1 332-1SH12)

Hi schutter,

The basic S7-300 312 is able to handle the amount of I/O's. You would need the Step7 programming software, along with an MPI programming cable: They come in different sizes, like USB, serial, PC card (PCMCIA). I/O cards come in sizes up to 32I, or 32O or even combined 16I/16O.

You could also use the 'smaller' S7-200 series for budget reasons. These are not 'real' Siemens (originally Texas Instruments but nowadays considered to be full member of the Siemens family), but both the programming software (MicroWIN) and the PPI cable are a lot cheaper. Another big advantage over the S7-300 series is that the 200's are DIN-rail 'click-ons': S7-300 series can only be mounted on a specific 300 alu rail. I/O cards also come in sizes up to 16I/16O. May I suggest using a 222CPU or even a 224CPU, should you decide on using the 200 series.

BTW, both excisting power supplies can be reused.
