In the RSLogix500 Help File for the IOM instruction it says:

Note: Expansion I/O is not permitted with the IOM instruction.

What is their definition of Expansion I/O in the ML1200? I have a SLC 5/04 that uses IOM on Analog Output cards that are within slots on the local rack.

But for the ML1200, are cards such as the 1762-OW16 treated different? Are these considered Expansion I/O?

An ML12000 comes with either 24 or 40 built in I/O. This is based on the catalog number (1762-L24 for 24 or 1762-L40 for 40) that you have.

Anything beyond that is considered expansion I/O. I believe you can hook up to 6 (six) expansion I/O modules.

So yes, the 1762-OW16 is considered expansion I/O.

Hope this helps.
