I'm not familiar with panelbuilder software or allen bradley brand panelviews and I was wandering if a program currently running on a panelview 1200 can be converted to run on a panelview 1400 with no special software.

Both of those old CRT panelviews used the same development software so you would not need it converted. As long as you're not going from a PV1200 to a PV1400e; the "e" PanelViews did have their own software.

I don't think that's right. 1200's had their own software.

I have PanelBuilder 32 open right now (which would be used for the 1400's) and the 1200 is NOT listed as a supported unit. I don't think it's an "easy" conversion.

Try searching the forum for panelview 1200. I think there's a 2 (or maybe 3) step process that will allow you to import it to newer versions. I have not done this, only read about it...

Hope this helps...

A brief geneaology of "PanelView"

PanelView Classic, model 1200. Used PanelView Development Software (PDS) for DOS and PDS for Windows.

PanelView Enhanced, models 1000e, 1200e, 1400e. Used PanelBuilder 1400e software.

PanelView Standard, models 300, 550, 600, 900, 1000, 1400. Use PanelBuilder32 software.

PanelView Plus, models 400, 600, 700, 1000, 1250, 1500. Use RSView Studio ME.

The most closely related are the Classic and Enhanced; you can easily translate a Classic to an Enhanced terminal.

Both Enhanced and Standard terminals can be imported for a partial translation by RSView Studio ME to run in a PanelView Plus terminal.

If you already have a PanelView 1400e, and the PanelBuilder 1400e software, then you can easily convert the 1200 Classic to a 1400e.

The bad news is that A-B will stop building the 1400e and 1000e terminals in 2008. You can put a flatscreen in (or get A-B to do it) to extend the life of 1400e terminals. I don't think A-B is offering flatscreen retrofits for the 1200 Classics, though it might have been done by third parties.

The method I prefer is to convert the 1200 Classic to PanelView Plus, while simultaneously converting the communications, usually to EtherNet/IP. I do not recommend converting RIO PanelView Classics to RIO PanelView Plus terminals.

"Without special software" is not an option; every vendor of electronic operator interface has proprietary software for their terminals, and none can cover 20 years of products with one software package.

Your conversion path depends on your cost versus criticality curve.
