I am Looking for a DC speed control. I am going to use a Direct automation PLC. So I need something that will accept a Volage like 1-10 or 4- 20ma signal. I found one at Mcmaster carr. (7729k13)That says it will take an external input signal (not included). But It does not say what kind of input it is? I am tring to run a 24DC motor. Any help?

Generally, the speed control for a DC motor board can be wired to an external potentiometer or a an analog output (1-10v).

McMaster-Carr's description is about useless though. If you want to be 100% sure of the specs, you could call them or find another vendor.

ezradavis72,

Be wary of low priced DC speed controls as the speed reference input is not isolated you will require a isolated signal conditioner to protect your analog output from distruction.

I called Mcmaster carr. They don't seem to know more then I do. So will this work Ultra-Thin Signal Conditioning Long-Life Relays (7356k22)Mcmaster carr?

Try these guys: http://www.kbelectronics.com/They have just what you need. I used to use them a lot before AC. I still have a customer that controls a plating line with a bunch of those and they last suprisingly long around the acid fumes. They will also take lots of time to answer your questions.
Good luck

That is an interposing on off relay.

AD sells this unit that will connect to your analog out from the plc http://web1.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Process_Controls/Signal_Conditioners/FC-33
This should work with most DC controllers that have three leads going to the speed pot.

I don't know any thing about Gas' suggestion about KB electronics so I don't know if it will work without any signal isolation. I'm only speaking from my experence with some of the other low priced dc controllers.

Well KB electronics did not have a 24v out put DC contoler with external inputs

Allied Electronics has a couple listed on page 736 of their catalog. The one is for a 24v motor, goes up to 20 amps, and has a 0-5 volt input for speed control.

The DC motor controllers I've used are mainly KB Electronics, which are nice products, but my experience is limited to 90VDC motors. Motors less than 90VDC generally are part of integrated packages like thermal printers and office equipment.

Ezra,

The Alllied Electronics unit should work, but actually KB Electronics does have 12, 24, 36 and 48 VDC motor controllers, with 0-5 VDC non-isolated signal-follower external input capability, good for up to 2 Horsepower permanent-magnet and series-wound DC motors. Signal input is jumper-selectable between potentiometer and 0-5 VDC input. They are designed for battery power, but I don't see any reason they would not work off of a smooth DC power supply also.
