Hand-held scanner to 1771

I'm new to the site. I've been tasked with putting in a hand-held barcode scanner to read a 2D barcode. I need to get the data into a PLC 5/80. I have a 1771 chassis nearby. Can anyone recomend a good resource for learning how to do this properly? Thanks!
