Pixel Counter Sensor Or Something???

I was wandering if anyone knows of a good pixel counter sensor. I need to detect if a machining hole is blocked on parts. We tried a IFM 02D224 Efector Dualis sensor. This sensor is great but did not work for application we want to do. The IFM application engineer said we need a pixel counting sensor which they will have next year. (I don't even know if there is such a thing as a pixel counter.) The 02D224 detects differences in contour of the part. We need to be able to detect the difference between light and dark shades. The 02D224 is $850 so a comparible price would be great. Have a good day!!

check the pixel counting sensers at Bannerengineering.com models include p2b65q presenceplus2 led140 led ring light minibeam2 qs126E

first of all what EXACTLY do you need?

what is the distance from sensor to target?
what is the size of the target?
are you looking at target from particular angle?
what is the color of the target (plugged or not)?
are there contaminants or unusal enviroment (dust, oil, lighting conditions, reflections, vibrations, motion, etc.)?
how fast reading has to be?

if the hole can be blocked by something, why not try distance laser sensor for example? O1D100 from IFM is $300 and can be configured as either analog or digital output (second output is always digital).
