Hi all,

I recall seeing a hand held instrument where you could plug in a wire, enter the wire size and the instrument would tell you the length of the cable. I believe it would measure the capacitance to calculate the length. I could sure use one to determine the cable lengths in our Modbus+ network. Anyone know what you call this instrument? Thanks.

You mean something like THIS?

Unless you plan on doing this a LOT, you can just use an ohmmeter. "Ohms per foot" tables are readily available.

For example:
#10AWG = 0.00102 Ohms/Ft.
#12AWG = 0.00162 Ohms/Ft.
#14AWG = 0.00258 Ohms/Ft.
#16AWG = 0.00409 Ohms/Ft.
#18AWG = 0.00651 Ohms/Ft.

Thank you for the replies, from the least expensive option to the most expensive. I appreciate the information.
