I'm making a trip to the southern part of England starting Thursday July 24th. I'll be in the Swan Inn in Salisbury on July 24th and 25th, in the Ilsington Country House Hotel in Newton Abbot on July 26th and 27th and Kingfisher Barn Holiday Cottages in Abingdon, Oxford on July 28th, 29th and 30th. I'll be glad to have a drink and a chat with any member who's in the neighborhood one of those days.

If anybody can point me to points of interest, I would be thankful. I have already decided to visit Old Sarum and Stonehenge from Salisbury, and in Oxford I want to visit the Ashmolean and do a Morse trip of the city. Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Salisbury has a nice cathedral if you are into things like that, it is worth having a look.

If you like things like Stonehenge, Avebury is probably 1 to 1.5 hours drive from Salisbury and has a large stone circle and an avenue of stones, plus you can walk upto and touch them etc whereas Stonehenge is behind a fence.

Try some of the english real ales too.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips. Avebury was on my wish list, as well as Salisbury cathedral. Concerning the English ales: I'll be in England for 7 days, but I'm a moderate drinker. As a rule, I never drink more than two alcoholic beverages per day. This gives me the opportunity to taste 14 different English beers. 🍺

Kind regards,

Maybe you should ask for a "yard of ale" - this would then only count as one beverage :)

Sorry, but I don't count that way. I'm fairly strict when it comes to alcohol consumption. My father was an alcoholic and I've been there too. I don't want to take any risk anymore. I'm glad I don't have to keep sober all the time to deal with my devils.

Kind regards,

Posting here for trips can work out well. I asked a similar question about New Zealand and met Gil in person. He showed me around - it worked out great!

Salisbury Cathedral is a given. While in London the wife and I went on day trips to Salisbury and Stonehenge. On the Stonehenge tour we also went to Bath. Maybe some locals will have suggestions.

Yes, Bath is nice too. I live in the area between Bath & Salisbury so dont really appreciate what ive got in terms of tourist stuff.

Bath has ancient roman baths and an Abbey, plus lots of Georgian buildings etc. I just go there when my wife wants to shop lol

There are a few horses carved into chalk hillsides around here

As others have said Salisbury Cathedral is a must. Try and get a good view of it from the distance, you really get a feeling of the height of the spire. I found Stonehenge disappointing when I visited a few years back, very commercialisied, cant get up close. Avebury was better.

What about visiting the Dorset coast, west of Weymouth, when travelling from Salisbury to Newton Abbot, lots of small villages and a relativly unspoilt coast line. Lyme Regis (famous for fossils found in the cliffs), Bridport and Sidmouth are the main towns. Maiden Newton, a large hill fort to the north of Weymouth is also worth a visit.

Bath is nice, like others have said salisbury cathedral, if in oxford then going for a punt on the river is a must!

If you have a couple of hours spare and want to have a walk down/up a set of 29 locks on the canal then Caen Hill is 35 minutes drive from salisbury and there are some nice country pubs in the area.

If you have already arrived but still able to read posts then the trip to Weymouth is best Friday or Saturday as someone has just done a Sandhotel sculpture that sounds impressive, if you are unable to and don't read this till getting back then I hope you enjoyed your trip and had a good experience of English hospitality.
P.S
On the off chance of reading while here then also take in Pool as well as Weymouth

Well, I just read this thread about the courtesy of completing a thread and I must say sometimes I'm also guilty, as is the case with this thread. I know this thread isn't as important as others, because it's completely off-topic. For those who are interested: yes, it was a very nice trip and I did enjoy it a lot and no, I didn't find my brother. He had already moved on again, so I can start over my search. Thanks for all who made suggestions. I have placed some pictures on my MSN space, just look in MSN for jvdcande.

Kind regards,
