Hello I am new to the industrial networking idea. We currently have about 8 Micrologix 1200's and 1 SLC 5/03 that need networked to gether to feed into a new Red Lion G3 touchscreen that will be used as a monitoring station. Currently the PLC's do not have 1761-NET-AIC as optical isolators. If I network these together using DH-485 do I need to add the NET-AIC modules or will it still work without them?

You need to use the AICs.
Serial ports on MX1200 are RS-232, you need to convert them to RS-485 with protocol DH-485.

Comm port on a Micrologix 1200 is RS-232.
DH-485, is a variation of RS-485 (proprietary to A-B). the signal level are not the same, therefore you need to convert the RS-232 to DH-485.
on the NET-AIC, the DIN connector and the DB-9 are the RS-232 side, while the Phoenix-6 is DH-485
For you SLC, you will need to use a 1747-AIC, to isolate it and to provide the appropriate mean of connection.
you maximum cable length will be 4000 ft
