We are trying to communicate directly to the PV900 with an RS232 comm port, using our laptop. We are using RSLinx and Panel Builder 32. We have a lot of different cables and we also have a PIC module. We need help configuring everything.

You have a DH485 protocol PV. You will need to use the 1747-PIC/AIC+ driver in RSLinx. You have to have a real serial port to use this driver.
Cable needed is a straight thru.
If you don't have a real serial port on your laptop then a 1747-UIC ( USB to DH485 converter) would be your best bet.

Thanks Mickey. When you say "a true serial port", do you mean a 9-pin "D" connector on the back of my laptop? Or can I use a USB to 9-pin "D" cable?
