I am in the process of designing a larger energy plant consisting of different PLC's and electronic protevtive relays. I am trying to understand what open protocol means and how does it work with a web based system. Can someone point me in the direction of some good information?

"Open" whatever means you can get in or out. Like a doorway. You could have to pay for this but there is a way to do it AND you will be supplyed most of the information to help you get in and out.

Example: "Modbus", "Linux" and "Chez Paré" (famous gentleman bar in Montreal).

Close would be the oposite. They own it and guard it so you can hardly acquire the knowledge to about it.

As I'm certain you know, a protocol is ONLY use to carry a transmisson to and from places. It check errors and does general maintenance on this network.

Some will argue that once the link is running, "who cares what protocol you use?" Some will say just the oposite.
