Sequential Function Charts were derived from the French Grafcet as this Wikipedia article also states. Grafcet was however a design technique, whereas SFC is one of the IEC61131 approved programming languages. Some of the advantages of knowing the basics of Grafcet are:

• you can use Grafcet to design a PLC program even if the PLC has no SFC abilities
• you can use Grafcet also to design hardwired relay logic, electronic logic circuitry or even pneumatic circuits
