My firm has been asked to design an ASI Bus network.

I have never worked with this before and wonder if anyone has stumbled across some worthwhile introductory information regarding this.

Any help would be much appreciated

Will the bus be for safety or general I/O?

I think your best bet is to talk to a vendor and get a quick training session. ASi has a bit of a learning curve and caused many frustrations the first time my company used it. Now, though, I like it because it is so flexible and easy to change compared to hard wires for safety circuits.

It will be for general IO not safety.

This is sort of a rushed job or else we would opt for the training.

I was hoping there was a primer somewhere on the net I could have a peek at.

Thanks alot though

IFM Effector has some good info on their site. http://www.ifm.com/ifmus/web/padv03_10_10_10_new.htm

We have used many of theSSt masters for AB Plc's they are very easy to setup once you understand the network.

P&F makes some good stuff also http://www.am.pepperl-fuchs.com/products/productfamily.jsp?division=FA&productfamily_id=1402

And Siemens.

From past experience if you happen to use and pneumatic valves for this project that will be controled by as-i stay away from MAC valves. I like their valves but their as-i gear is horrible. Just a tip.

I have used it before in past projects, really simple to integrate and monitor on the SLC platform that I used.

I used the ASI-SST card, with very good results.
It really depends on which PLC/OS system that you choose to integrate and work with. As I explained, I used the SLC platform.
Basically, words are copied from the M-and G-Files.....as far as I remember.
Don't get worried. It is quite simple.

Hello Chado613;
On the following link you will find a very complete (and voluminous) document on all aspects of As-i networks. I have found it a very informative ressource whern attacking an As-i bus setup:
http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/26250840

However, the S7-400 platform does not have a backplane As-i master (such as the S7-300 and S7-200 families). You will have to use a DP/As-i link such as this one:
http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/22710305

Hope this helps,
Daniel Chartier
