You have 1747-UIC adapter, right? Don't use autoconfigure!
Select RS-232 DF-1 devices, Add New. You'll have to go into your hardware manager under Control Panel (in XP) to determine what port your adapter is in - enter this in the correct box. Select 1770-KF3/1747-KE for the Device. Set error checking to CRC.
I assume you don't have a proper COM port on yur laptop. If you do, it's a lot easier to connect through the DF-1 port (SLC 5/03 & later).
Good luck!

Did you try restarting RSlinx? Sometimes you have to delete the driver and rebuild it.

If you have a 9 pin null modem cable you can connect into the serial port of the SLC if you have a serial port on your computer.

More questions:
What is the brand- model number of your USB to Sreial adapter( not all work with autoconfigure)
What kind of cable is attached between the USB to Serial adapter and your SLC5/03?
How is the serial port on your SLC5/03 configured? Do you have the offline file of the SLC5/03? If so zip the .rss file and post it here. The port can be configured for DF1,DH485,ASCII, or shutdown.
Can you give us a screen shot of RSLinx's configuration?
