I had a major error today on a 5/40E, anybody know what the fault was? I tried looking it up in the help section of Logix but no go. Here is the crash report:

Maybe someone on here knows how to diagnose the crash log file on a PLC-5. I for one don't. We always forward this information to AB and open a tech support case when we get them. Last time we had a series of these we had to get several of our processors firmware updated. But it was a couple of times a week problem.

The A/B tech said that it was an I/O timeout error but he couldn't elaborate. He said if I would update the firmware to K.3 from E.2, I could get more info the next time it happened. I have bricked a few devices trying to flash firmware so I am a little nervous. A $6000 processor for a paperweight would not make me happy. Anybody ever flash one?

The last time I upgraded the firmware on a PLC5, I had to get a "chip kit" that replaced eproms in the processor. I still think they do it that way rather than with a flash upgrade.

Ah-so, that's why the tech told me he would email the zip file and send me a corn chip. I now believe he said comm chip.

Hi,
Last time (only time) I had a 5/40E take a dump it turned out to be a RAM memory failure that required a complete replacement. My cost was $9,000 with an exchange of the old unit.
The firmware kit is a box of several chips. Some are for communication. I didn't get any files to download.
These processors are usually bulletproof. We have some that are over 20 years old & still chugging along.

Good Luck
BD
