Hi,
My company builds machinery on which we use Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC's. We use drive speed controllers that have their own proprietary RS232 ASCII communication interface that does not follow any industry standard. I would like to find the easiest way to establish communication (read & write) between my PLC and my drive speed controllers.
I believe that Allen-Bradley makes an RS232/ASCII module that would allow me to write some custom code to read/write info to my drive speed controllers but looking quickly at the manual, it looks like it would be a very significant programming challenge.
In the past, I have used a customizable PC-based Data Acquisition Server called Omniserver to setup communication between these same drive speed controllers and a PC. This is very easy to setup. You don't have to write any code - you basically just have to enter some details about the specific character sequences your devices uses for the parameters you want to read and write to. This works great but the only drawback is that it requires a PC.
I'd really like to find some sort of intermediary device (but not a PC) that would allow me to easily configure communication with my drive speed controllers and to pass info from these drive speed controllers to/from my PLC using a standard interface the the PLC is good at.
If anyone has any recommendations, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Paul
