SLC5/03 (RJ-45) to Panelview 600 (D-9) DH-485 comm cable

Rule #1 of all PanelView questions is "post the complete part number".

If your PanelView has a DB-9 serial connector, it uses RS-232 and cannot be directly connected to the 8P8C RJ-45 style connector on an SLC-5/03 controller, which is RS-485.

Post the complete part number of your PanelView and Forum members can help you determine what kind of converter or interface device is necessary to connect it to an SLC-5/03 controller.

See Picture and PDF's below for harware and cables needed.

Or connect your PV to the SLC5/03's serial port ( configured for DH485).

See Picture below for cable

Thanks for the great information guys, but something still does'nt make sense to me. Why would I need to use the SLC5/03 RS-232 port configured as DH-485 when the RJ-45 port IS a DH-485 communication port? I also don't see why I would need a NET-AIC in between as I do not need to bridge to/from DF1 at all. The DB9 on the PV600 can talk DH-485, the RJ-45 on the SLC is a DH-485 comm port, why is this not one on one, just like the RS-232 port configured as DH-485?

Because AB says so!... ;)

Seriously though, it's because the RJ45 uses RS-485 (not to be confused with DH485), while the DB9 uses RS-232.

At least that's MY understanding... :confused:

The reason I subjected the RS232 port on your SLC as an option is because you would not need extra hardware. Just a straight thru cable.

And as Eric pointed out the AIC is not a protocol converter its a RS232 to RS485 converter as well as an (RS232) isolator.

most misconceptions is that one is an electrical standard..and the other is a protocol used for communications.

And this is the best solution so far if I really would have to use a NET-AIC to use the RJ-45 port, but that still does not make sense to me that I can't use the actual DH-485 port the same way...

As robo77 said, DH485 is a protocol. Yes, both devices speak DH485, but the wiring is different. This means that they can't be electrically connected together. RS-232 is a 3-wire system, while RS-485 is a 2 wire system. They aren't electrically compatible. Omega has a pretty good explanation HERE (ignore the RS422 stuff). Especially look at the wiring diagrams at the bottom.

EDIT: I found a decent explanation on YouTube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvRD2UvrHjE#t=0m38s

A poor analogy, but think of it like the USB and the DB-9 ports on your computer. You can use either one to program most PLCs. Both are serial devices, but you can't wire a USB port directly to a DB-9 port. You need to use a converter. Yeah, I said it was a poor analogy... :rolleyes:

Actually DH485 is both a protocol and an electrical spec.
DH485 = DH485 protocol
DH485 = RS485 electrical spec.

kinda of agree but can't you use rs485 and modbus RTU(protocol)

so the = would not be totally exact. :) but yes dh485 can use rs485
