Its funny, I went to SAM'S CLUB today because a bolt broke on my alternator which loosened the belt and naturally the battery wasnt changed. Being stranded I walked over to Sam's Club to look around and FOUND a Compaq laptop I think around 2.4GHZ that actually HAD A SERIAL PORT. I didnt look close enough to state details but price was $997.

Depends on situation but a built in serial port is a MAJOR concern in many cases.

If looking for a really cheap viable option then checkout http://www.ebay.com In most cases a 500MHZ or so will work fine with plc's etc. I still use an IBM 390E running Win98, allows me to use DOS when needed, has USB ports, and serial port. I can connect to AB's using a PIC with no problem, AB's using a PCMK card, Siemens using either a serial to PPI or MPI adapter, Siemens using a CP5511 pcmcia card, GE Fanuc using the SNP adapter, Automationdirect and numerous drives. I now work with a GE spinoff, HORNER PRODUCTS that uses a serial cable and free software. I do need to upgrade or at least by another laptop identical to this one, its getting a little worn.
