Hi !

I am thinking of using NET-ENI units to connect a set of 36 SLC5/03 PLCs in Ethernet network. but I am also facing distance problems to reach the physical SCADA facility, which stands at least 100m from the field.

I will connect all my NET-ENIs to ethernet hubs, but I need to know if there is an ethernet hub with Fiber Optics output, so that I can overcome the distance problem.

Do you know of any 24 ports Ethernet Hub with such output??, or could you suggest me a manufacturer?

Hope I was clear.... Thanks

Sounds like you might want a Cisco Hub with a Fiber Optic uplink or something like that. Maybe one Cisco at one end, and another Cisco at the other. Or you can get Fiber Optic PCI cards, with Ethernet converters. (see below)

But really though...I ran Ethernet across a two lane street once, I know it was more than 100m, and I didn't have any problems.

Disclaimer...I don't know these people or anything, and I am not advertising for them, but here are a few examples on eBay:

Sherman4,

I did a google search using "ethernet hub fiber optic" as my search and came up with this product as one of my finds.

I have never used or even heard of this brand before but though I might offer it up anyway.

Good luck

Long Distance Ethernet

Thank you Chakorules and Steve

Both options sound pretty good for dealing with this unpleasant distance problem.

Another way to come up with a solution could be using hi-performance UTP cable from one end to the other, that might give me still 130 meters with a good 10Mbps performance, and will be the cheaper option.

Nevertheless I incline more to the O.F. solution.

Thank you both.

Actually my solution to your problem is pretty straight fwd.

Obtain 232 to 422/485 converters from a Company such as B&B electronics (inexpensive). Place these converters between ENI and
SLC 5/03 (one at each end). Run your RS-485 cable for thousands of feet. Reduce the Ethernet run to minimum.
Been there done that!
Simple and cost effective!

Fiber or cat5e copper wires.

I would use a Cisco Hub or Switch with a fiber uplink. Fiber is a much better solution for long distances over 100m. There is less chance for data loss, which could bring down prodution.

On the PLC side, I would use a sheilded cat5e cable running from the PLC to the hub. This will also prevent data loss.

There are other hubs if Cisco is too expensive. 3com, and Notrel Bay are other good companys to look at. If you are not worried about a warrenty, look on EBAY!

I work at a printing plant and we use both copper wires, and a lot of fiber. I would use fiber, less to troubleshoot, and easy to use.

There is my 2 cents...
