1756 ENBT as I/O

I have a 1756-ENBT, some ControlLogix I/O, a rack, and power supply and want to use this hardware as ethernet remote I/O.

From this it says:
an adapter for 1756 I/O modules

so I think I can do this. In RSLogix5000, I can add the parts and all seems well, but my question is really how does this work under the hood? Can I use generic EIP scanners (other PLCs or software) to make Class 1 implicit connections and read this I/O? What assembly instances are there, and how are they derived? Is the mechanism producer/consumer, so limited to A-B CLX series only? I perused the eds file and it doesn't look good - I see no connections defined for the ENBT module so not sure how this is addressed. Any expert thoughts? Thanks!
