Does anyone have a manual specifically for the 520C that I could get a copy of? I am specifically looking for info on the initialization process after a battery failure, which port should be used for the programming cable (db9 or db25) and the port settings (parity, data bits, stop bit), which LEDs should be lit and when....etc. The processor we have had a dead battery and we are not having luck communicating with it through TISoft.

Any other input would be great.

Just to be clear, we have tried a couple of computers, but one of them was an old desktop running windows 98 with a built-in rs-232 port. It would get a timeout error when trying to go online.

Thanks in advance. :)

I'll see what I have manual wise when I get into my office Monday.
You may have some comm issues unless you can run TISoft in DOS. I know I've had to use a DOS PC to reload the TI500 series. Sometimes you can get status (WIN98) with some errors but transferring not so much.

The replacement software is FastTrak Softworks http://www.fast-soft.com and will work with the older ones.

For hardware CTI http://www.controltechnology.com/

Steve Bailey and RussB are the experts, maybe they will jump in soon. Here is a little bit of info that I found.
I believe the 520 was in the 525 family of controllers, might be wrong. If it is, then here are a few links that may help.

Some of the posts are old but there are some new posts that may help.
Link to 525 plc manual:

Link to most of the manuals in that family:

And in this VPU manual figure 4.5 shows how a 25 pin to 25 pin cable is built.
After you build the 25 t0 25 pin cable you may need to get a 9 to 25 pin adapter for the computer end unless you know how to wire the db9 direct for the computer end.

No the 520c isn't in the 545/525 family. Different hardware, it is the older 500 series. Use manual 530-8107.
The DB25 is the RS232. The only setting is baud with dip sw 3 & 4 on for 9600. Shouldn't matter with TISoft2 as it autobaud sets. The top 3 LEDs should be on when all OK.

Thanks for the replys! :)

I have been through every manual Simatic has to offer. I think the 530-8107 you mentioned (which I cannot find) would be the one I'm after.

The reason I asked about db9 or db25 is because the 520C processor has both. I assumed either could be used for programming (I know, pretty stupid on my part), so we have been using a null modem cable db9 to db9, plugging into the db9 port on the processor card. I will acquire a db9 to db25 null modem cable.

We will be using an old laptop with a built-in serial (db9) running windows 95. If need be I have a copy of DOS 6.22.

Fastrack wanted about $3800.00 for their software (I actually got a quote), I will exhaust all possibilities before even thinking about that.

I know there is an initialization procedure to clear the system upon battery failure to reset it. If it is the same as a 525 we should be good (I think anyways).

Once again, thanks for your help guys.

What version of TISoft do you have?
I made a PDF of the 530-8108 Hardware Ref Guide that I can send you. It is rather large 4168kb. This manual has all you need to know except a cable diagram. Use a typical DB25 to DB9 serial cable. I can send a pin out of mine.
Let me know how you want this file transfered.
I also have (not in PDF yet) a program design guide 530-8110.

Once again, you guys are great.

I was able to obtain the info I needed here -- https://www.automation.siemens.com/...?PageIndex=1&PostID=260869&Language=en#260869

Although I have not confirmed it yet, I'm pretty sure my whole snafu is my own stupidity for trying to communicate rs-232 in the db9 port instead of the db25. It may be a few days until I get back to this processor, so I will update you all then.

I have the cable pin configuration in another manual and an electronics guy to make it for me, so I should be all set...I hope.

Thanks again...I'll update soon.

I just want to thank everyone again, the project was a complete success.

I was not able to use my USB to RS-232 adapter. I just could not get it to communicate through Vista or DOSBox. Maybe if I play around with it a bit more it may work, but I was under a deadline and didn't have the time.

I did get my hands on an old laptop loaded with Windows 98' and had a built in serial port. It worked like a champ.
