Micrologix 1500 AWA with ac prox. question

Hi,
I have a ML1500 awa base plc that i'm wiring to a punch press. The press has notched steel wheel and an ac inductive proximity sensor for positioning and speed monitoring. My question is, could I use the HSC function to count the pulses of the sensor or will it only work for DC inputs/devices?

I am not sure what your results were, but I would have guessed that your inductive prox was too noisy for the application. You might have been able to sense the changing position but you probably didn't get the velocity. You do elude to an interesting question: is the amount of time for the inductive prox to generate the voltage level high enough to switch the switch on sufficient or would we need a faster acting DC device? Further would hysteresis of the prox cause problems? So did you try it?

I believe the HSC functions are only for DC input models.

I agree with Bernie HSC only for DC. You can add a HSC card though.

The OP will still need DC inputs.

But is a run of the mill general off-the-shelf DC inductive proximity switch responsive enough to adequately measure speed and position. My afore-stated argument is that it is not. (I missed that he stated that he has an ac prox, my statements assumed that he had a DC prox.)

Thanks for the input. The ac AWA 1500 does have two HSC function files available, although you can't adjust the filters. I did try an ac prox using HSC0, but it wouldn't react fast enough, thus counts were sporadic at best. Filtering would be necessary.
I did think about using a solid state relay to interface with the ac inputs of the AWA, but not being able to adjust the filters, I decided to go with an anti-tie-down program using the prox and timer.
