Hey guys,

Could do with your input here. I'm currently looking into a new interlock system, and was thinking about using RFID tags but haven't done a great deal with them before & hope you could help set me straight.

Here's an example of what i am trying to achieve:
When a operator connects "Pipe A" to "Connection A" I want to be able to know that its Pipe A connected. Then if the operator connects "Pipe B" to "Connection A" I also want to know that it is Pipe B connected.

We have done before with proximity switches which gave the PLC give a different binary value depending on the pipe connected. What i want to know is can i have a RFID tag on each pipe & then a RFID reader on each of the connections?

Yes, that would be a perfectly acceptable use of the RFID.

But, how many readers and how many tags may you need? They will be more difficult to program and set up than a prox' and flag system.

They will also be more expensive. So it may be a lot of trouble for a small number of units, and may be too expensive for a large number of (especially) readers.

I did a system where we had approximately 20 readers and 100 tags on a pallet line, for keeping track of what had been done to each pallet.

Sounds like a great idea if you have high enough costs associated with a mis-connection to justify the expense or have several different pipes that you need to attach to a single connection point. I show it priced at about US$500 here. Wouldn't take many foul-ups to to see a decent ROI.

I saw AB's RFID line at Automation Fair last year and they have some M18 size readers that will work out to about 30mm. I'm sure other vendors have similar.
