port replicators

Does anyone know if using a port replicator will allow me to configure my (serial portless) laptop to use the serial port on com1? I have a usb adaptor, but on my laptop it gets added in on com5, which isn't supported by some applications. I'm using a keyspan usb adaptor, which in all other respects seems to work very well.

Normally, the USB adapter will get assigned the next available COM port. Open up device manager and expand the "Ports (COM & LPT)" to see what COM1 thru COM4 are currently used by.

If COM1 is in use, you won't be able to assign a USB port replicator to use that port either. If you're referring to a factory type port replicator (non-USB), then it may be another story... :huh:

Sorry, should be more clear. Yes, that is what I am referring to. I have a Compaq Evo, and I was curious if their port replicator(which plugs into the connection on the buttom of the laptop) will use it's serial port on com1. When I open my device manager, com1's location is listed as being on the Extended IO Bus. I think!? that means it is reserved for the connector for port replicators/docking stations, etc. I was thinking about buying their (compaq) port replicator/portable docking station, and I was wondering if anyone else is currently using a port replicator.

I would think that style replicator would give you a TRUE serial port (and probably be COM1 as well!). Don't rely on my opinion though. Someone here probably has an EVO and docking station and can confirm this.

I had the same problem with an IBM thinkpad,i got a thinkpad replicator with a serial port and was able to configure the serial port as com 1.

I picked up a compaq port replicator for my compaq evo laptop and configured everything fine on com1. I tested my (antiquated) 1747 pic box adapter successfully as well. I generally use the adaptor for my pcmk card for the dh-485, but I needed the serial com drivers for some of our dos based servodrive programs. Only problem is, the port replicator cost about $250.
