Allen Bradley SLC5/03 Communication

I have a Allen Bradley SLC5/03 processor. I have a RTU connected to port 0. The RTU is configured as DF1 half duplex master, 9600 baud (these settings cannot be changed). I need to connect a second RTU to the PLC. This can be done with a port splitter on port 0 to share the port with the first RTU or a port splitter on port 1 to share port 1 with the second RTU and a programming port. I've tried the 1747 DPS1 and DPS2 port splitters but they don't support 9600 baud. Any ideas?

Is it a very old Allen Bradley Remote Terminal Unit? The comm settings in the newer AB DataSite Remote Terminal Unit Controllers can be changed.

This sounds like an unusual system; usually RTUs are the slave devices, not the masters. But it is what it is.

I don't think the port splitter will do what you want. As you have pointed out, the incompatible port speeds are a problem that might not be solvable.

My instinct would be to add a 1747-KE module or a Prosoft MVI46-DFNT module to the chassis and let that communicate with the new RTU.

If you want to pursue matching the port speeds and using the DPS2, you could try a baud rate converter like the B&B Electric 232BRC.

Tell us what this RTU is, brand name , model number. How is the port on the SLC configured?

It is an old Micra Systems RTU that we are phasing out. The driver and protocol settings are not configurable. We are replacacing them with a Motorola Ace RTU, but need to run both systems side by side until all sites are upgraded.

Thanks Ken, looks like the 1747-KE will be the quickest and cheapest way to get another port. I'll give it a go.
