Hi all,

this is a math problem my 4th grade son brought home and even I find myself needing help.

all 9 players of a baseball team are sitting on the bench in their batting order.

here are the clues
1 jeff is batting fifth, and david will bat before carlos.

2. jordi sits between david and greg, and Andrew is to the right of jeff.

3. greg bats after jordi but before Andrew.

4. luis follows Andrew, but not phil

5 carlos and tom are at each end of the bench.

determine the batting order.

thanks in advance,
james

Well the answer to this is forget baseball, imagine it's cricket :D

Ok how does this look, I think it meest all the rules:

Tom, David, Jordi, Greg, Jeff, Andrew, Lois, Phil, Carlos

I'm not totally sure about clue number 2; Andrew to the right of Jeff.

Maybe you know which way they sit on the bench, is number 1 on the left of the bench? I know almost nothing about Baseball (apart from it looks very similar to a game called Rounders that is mainly played by girls over here but without the face mask and big gloves)! o_O

Tom - David - Jordi - Greg - Jeff (5) - Phil - Andrew - Luis - Carlos

English is not my first language, you know.. *lame excuse*

My stab at it:

1. Tom
2. David
3. Jordi
4. Greg
5. Jeff
6. Andrew
7. Luis
8. Phil
9. Carlos

andypot, JHarbin,

that's what I got.
I posted an answer earlier, don't know where it went.

I can't believe they expect a 9 year old to figure this stuff out.

I took me several readings and pieces of paper to figure this out. my mind must be getting soft.

thanks,
james

Batting order is as follows:
1) Tom
2) David
3) Jordi
4) Greg
5) Jeff
6) Andrew
7) Luis
8) Phil
9) Carlos

I used an Excel sheet and made adjustments as the clues were tested. Easier then sheet of paper.

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox on winning the World Series.

jeff =5
david < carlos
david <> jordi <> greg
jef >? andrew
jordi < greg <andrew
luis = andrew+1
tom=1

and yes it is normal for this grade we old guys are not in seqeunces and situations.
