Gents:

I have a Red Lion G306 on a 485 link to an Automation Direct Click PLC.

The G3 is also connected to my desk top PC via a Ethernet cable and I am thus able to access it by entering the IP address of the G3 in to Google Chrome web browser.

I need to move the PLC and HMI to a location about 200feet from my desk top PC. I am looking for an economical wireless replacement for the Ethernet cable.

Can the G3 talk to a wireless router that would in turn connect to the wifi on the PC?

I also would like to be able to access the G3 from the web browser in a wireless devise ie. I-phone etc.

Thanks for a great site!

I do that I'm my home office using a Netgear wireless extender. I plug the G3 and the PLC into the extender. Connect the extender to my home wireless internet connection. Then I can sit at my desk and upload and download all day. Works great.

I just use a low cost Netgear wireless router. 200' could be a stretch if going thru multiple walls... with the one I have. I have a couple of Cradlepoint routers that will burn thru steel, but can't access the web server's with my Nexus 7 or phone unless there is an internet connection.

It's really handy being able to access screens on my Nexus 7. Don't have to drag a laptop around at a few places I go.

My cell phone is an Atrix with Firefox, and that sucks with the RL web servers. iPhones with Safari work well. Chrome on my N7 works quite well, but I would toss some caution out trying to run a machine from a tablet. I had a goofy thing happen while testing a weld cell. Seems like the issue went away with the latest update to 4.4.2, but...

Hello,
Thanks, Ill try the Netgear router.

...not planning on running the machine from a tablet, just need to be able to receive sms / email for alarms etc.

Ok, next question:

How can I get the G3 to email the pc?

Neither device is connected to the internet…. and so I cant just enter an email address as the recipient.

But in the event of an alarm I would like to receive email notification on the pc as well my iPhone, (when its in range of the wireless signal from the G3.)

Google Chrome works well to monitor the G3 thru the wifi but I still need to receive warning messages when the browser is pointed else where.

Unfortunately email doesn't work that way. Your phone is set up to only check a specific server for incoming email. The G3 has to be able to get a message to that server.

If the G3 is on a corporate network that has a mail server, you might be able to use that to bounce the messages off, but there has to be a path from the G3 to the internet to make email work.

Technically, you could do it if you plug another computer into the G3, set up your own private mail server on that computer, and then configure your phone to check a dedicated mailbox on *that* server for incoming mail. Configuring and securing a mail server is beyond the scope of the forum though, I suspect.
