Hello, I am new to automation industry (rookie) and struggling to find answers to questions regarding communication networks.

Can anyone tell me on what basis do we determine which of the following communication should be used?
1.Ethernet/IP
2.ControlNet
3.Modbus
4.Profibus
5.DH+
6.Control Area Network
7.DeviceNet
8.ProfiNet

I understand:
  • it depends on process to process but many times, they are interchangeable. Why/how?
  • different PLCs prefer different networks but what are the key factors on which we determine/select a network?

I also read about Field, Control and Information level communication system but didn’t get the clarity. I would really appreciate if someone can shed more light on it.

Thanks,

Abhzter
