I'm attempting to use a Simatic Field PG (6es7715-1dd20-0ce3) to connect to an S5-100U CPU .

I've tried using the step5 software in DOSBox but I was getting communication errors (something about the frame being the wrong size), I've now installed Windows 98 as a virtual machine, but now I'm just getting 'PLC Timeout' whenever I try and bring the PLC online.

My COM1 settings are:
19200bps
8 data bits
Parity: None
1 stop bit
No flow control

Any ideas on how I can get this to communicate?

I have no ideas how to get the old STEP5 (v7.x ?) to work on a new PC.
I am guessing the COM1 settings in Windows or DOS are irrelevant. The PG port on the S5 CPU use 9600 baud and AS511 protocol.

If you cannot get it to work, consider S5 for Windows from IBH. They also have a USB-S5 adapter that works with new PCs. I think that maybe their USB-S5 adapter even works with STEP5, so it might be worth a try.

Congrats.

Surprised that you have got it working, though. I am guessing you are using the serial RS232/TTY adapter 6ES5734-1BD20. I have heard that is tricky to get to work if it is not connected to a real serial port.
