Micrologix 1500 to PC Communications

Been a while since posting here. I have a system that has been dumped in my lap and looking for insight. Here are the details.

PLC: Micrologix 1500
Server: Dell PowerEdge R220
OS: Windows 2012 R2
Comms: DH485 via COM1
Comms Driver: CimQuest IN-GEAR AB Standard Edition Configuration

I cant seem to get the COM1 port on the server as standard to communicate with the PLC. I can comm with the PLC with my laptop to download the program and such via DH485 protocol. No issues.

My question. If I setup my driver in RSLinx Classic as COM4 from my laptop will the PLC expect the PC to use COM4 as well for comms? I am new to all of this.

No, the PLC does not care or know what comm port your PC/Laptop is using.

Check to see if any thing else (software) is using comm 1 on your PC.

Has it ever worked? what cable are you using (both your PC and server)

I figured it out. The Dell servers COM ports were the problem. Once I found which port was REALLY COM1 and set the I/O range correctly communications were achieved.

Also, I had to set the default Comms switch to ON. Thank you for the replies!
