Hello. I would like to know if anyone here has experience with the Omron NX series PLC? We are looking to build a system using this PLC and I was hoping to get some feed back from you folks here. Also, we are going to be using EtherCAT, which is also unfamiliar to me. I have information and am reading to see what the significant differences are between that and regular Ethernet IP/TCP? Thank you.

I have not yet used the Omron NX series PLC. Looks like a good product.

Significant difference is the speed between EtherCAT and Ethernet TCP/IP. Information is passed before being processed at each node. This can aid in synchronization.
This is a good paper on the differences without going into the exact details.

I'm interested in your feedback if you decide to go with the NX.
Thanks,
Garry

I have used it with several input and output modules, as well as encoder and thermocouple units, and it worked very well.
Fairly easy to setup everything by myself too.

I will. It isn't up to me, the powers that be have already decided that this is the PLC we will be using. Thanks for the EtherCAT info.

Thank you for your input. The demo it was presented to us with made it look very easy to set up. It was this or a ControLogix. Once they saw the price difference, that was all she wrote. Lol

Are you looking at Omron NX series distributed IO or the top of the line NJ series processor NX701?

Here is a link to the EtherCat website https://www.ethercat.org/default.htmsome good info there.
It is my understanding that Ethercat is very fast and uses small packets. A lot of PLC people are using it for motion these days.
It is also my understanding that with 2 EtherCat ports in a processor it is possible to use a ring topology with a wired network and pick up a break in the Ethernet cable.
I have not used the NJ at this point as there is no benefit there for me. I still use the CP1, CS1 and CJ2 series. Perhaps one day.

It says file temporarily not available but thank you for trying. I was able to find some info.
