I'd like to second your choice of using VMWare. Your host OS doesn't really matter as long as it is supported by current virtualization software.

Their VMs are portable between different systems...

At the end of the current flash cycle, decrement the count, if it's greater than zero. "XIC ONS SUB" also comes to mind.
