I am aware of this principle but I guess it will be Kirschoff's law if I need to convert from current to voltage ie. V=E +IR, where E is the back emf, R= armature resistance.

Exactly!....I was thinking of the same & hence...

Exactly!....I was thinking of the same & hence replaced the battery.The voltage read 2.95V (its a 3V battery) but didnt take a chance though and replaced it with a 3 V battery.
